The Positive Teacher Feature: Victoria Hewett

Positive Teacher Feature 4: meet Victoria!
.
Geography teacher, Victoria Hewett, is well known as the author of 'Making it as a Teacher' and for her rather splendid blog and work on mental health. In fact she is a bit of star, and most definitely a ridiculously positive teacher, so you can imagine our delight when she agreed to be featured! Keep an eye on your glue sticks though... #ruthless...
.

Name: Victoria Hewett (@MrsHumanities)

Role:

Subject Leader for Geography and Environmental Systems and Societies at an IB School in Kent.

Why did you get into teaching?

I decided to do a PGCE not to teach but to learn to teach in order to start my career in environmental education, I wanted to work with young people to help them to find a love for their human and physical world so they’d want to conserve it. However I loved being in the classroom environment so much I didn’t want to leave.

What are your top tips for positivity and excitement within your role?

Never stop learning! Whether it’s subject knowledge or pedagogical practice, always be keen to learn more. Once you stop, you stagnate. You do the things you’ve always done and in my opinion that’s when teaching becomes boring.

Looking back, what advice would you give your NQT/Trainee self?

Good is good enough.

What's the best thing about being a teacher?

I love the variety of every day. I could teach the same lesson several times and each time the students make it ever so different. I love that it never feels like the same thing day in day out.

Would you rather snort like a pig in the next staff meeting for 5 seconds (no explanation allowed!) or hide all of your school's glue sticks in your cupboard for a term (again, no explanation allowed, assuming you are caught!)?

School glue sticks... already hide the departmental ones there. I’m like the glue fairy, I fill up my departments supplies when they are not around.

Do you love teaching? If you'd like to nominate yourself or another teacher who you think deserves to be featured, please email us at enquiries@thepositiveteachercompany.co.uk. We'd love to hear from you!
